Written by

With the first day of Summer fast approaching and the countdown to Christmas well underway, we know that you’ve got plenty on your plate, and brainstorming ways to keep your kids entertained is a time consuming task that you just cannot grasp at this time.

So in an effort to eliminate one of your many to-dos, we’ve tapped into the idea bank and compiled a list of family-friendly activities to keep your little ones entertained all Summer long. To your delight, this carefully curated list won’t break the bank! It may even inspire some creative ideas of your own!

It’s certainly nice knowing that Mother Nature has (through the declaration of Summer) allowed us to climb out of our hibernation huts and return to the outdoors to bask in the glorious sunshine! In honour of the Summer season, we suggest scheduling in as many of these summer favourites, and reserve the indoor activities for the less favourable of days.

  1. Picnic

A picnic in the gardens is one of the best ways to soak up the sunshine this Summer. Our favourite spots include: St Kilda Botanical Gardens, Edinburg Gardens and of course, Studley Park. All you need is a picnic rug or two, light snacks (preferably a combination of sweet and savoury) and your sun smart essentials.

  1. Hike

There is something so peaceful about exploring Melbourne’s natural bushland. With an abundance of wildlife to observe, your kids will be mesmerised by nature’s wonderful creatures. We recommend no more than a 2km trail for beginners. Comfortable shoes, an adequate water supply and a backpack filled with snacks, will go a long way in boosting those energy levels.

  1. Tree top adventures

If you’re feeling extra adventurous and have an appetite for thrilling obstacle courses, then this one is for you. Suitable for both kids (5+) and adults, Tree surfing is an exhilarating activity that will have the whole family swinging, leaping, climbing and flying through the forest, leaving them hungry for more!

  1. Boating

Hire a boat at Studley Park Boathouse and paddle down Melbourne’s iconic Yarra River. By the time you’ve completed your mission, why not stop by the Boathouse Café for decadent treat or two!

  1. Sunny ridge strawberry farm

The best part about picking strawberries is the delicious reward you get to take home with you. Devour them fresh or alternatively, put your baking skills to the test! After all, it is the season for baking!

  1. Ashcombe Maze & Lavender Garden

The Ashcombe Maze is home to Australia’s largest and oldest hedge maze. These immaculate gardens are something out of a fairy tale! Standing at over 3 metres tall and 2 metres thick, it will certainly keep the kids occupied and the adults mesmerised by the breathtaking surroundings.

  1. Collingwood Children’s Farm

A taste of the country, nestled in a quiet pocket along the Yarra River. This delightful hidden gem allows kids to enjoy a close encounter with cows, goats, chickens, horses, ducks, pigs and even guinea pigs!

  1. Puffing Billy

Step back in time and take a ride on this century old steam train which runs on a 25km track from Belgrave to Gembrook, through the picturesque forests of the Dandenong Ranges.

  1. Queen Victoria Market

Taking on a carnival-like atmosphere, this historic landmark comes to life on a Sunday! With a generous mix of food, entertainers and activities for the kids, what’s not to love?

  1. Melbourne Zoo

Another activity for the animal lovers. The Melbourne Zoo is home to over 250 species from around the world. Stroll through the lush landscapes, closely observe and learn about the world’s magnificent wildlife. A trip to the Melbourne Zoo is both a fun and educational experience for the whole family.
